TRAVEL WITH YOUR WHOLE BODY
Writing Portfolio of Laura Marjorie Miller
If my poetry aims to achieve anything, it's to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel.
I write about travel, magic, myth, natural history, ocean conservation, and other soulful subjects.
My first ebook, The Flagrant Joys of Solo Travel, is available now on Amazon Kindle.
Since I write for a living, it would be daunting and voluminous to produce an exhaustive list of all my work, so I have selected my finest, favorite pieces for this portfolio, ones that best represent the direction I want to go. Please explore these publications further according to your interest. As an experiential writer, I advocate traveling with one’s whole body, a deeper awareness of natural history, and exploration as a creative act.
Medium is where I take my brain out for a run. Includes poetry and 'off-trail' essays!
I was a contributing writer at elephantjournal from 2010-2014.
Elephant helped me get my start working under my own byline. I wrote 56 articles for them on pagan holidays, travel, and soul development, which you can access here.
One of my two articles (so far!) for Yankee, and the only one online, this one visits a wolf sanctuary in Ipswich and discusses the indigenous history of the grey wolf in New England.
Channeled from the point of view of a female peregrine falcon, this is one of my favorite pieces I have produced for _UMass Magazine_. It required research with Mass Wildlife and numerous people who work with endangered species and the DuBois Library falcons. The old format of the magazine is to flip, so the article appears on pages 10-11.
This cover story, appearing pgs. 20-27 of this flip edition,
involved interviews with multiple researchers and is one of my proudest milestones as a writer.
PURIFYING MYSELF IN NEW MEXICO'S WHITE SANDS, OUTPOST MAGAZINE
One of the most spectacular hikes in the Universe, deepened by a meditation on forgiveness, published in this beautiful Canadian travel magazine.
A cold-water trip to Newfoundland among the great rock formations, seabirds, white-beaked dolphins, and grazing humpback whales. Flip format, begins on page 126.
I traveled to Peru for this feature on ayahuasca and its healing properties for women. It involved interviews with fellow _pasajeras_, as well as participatory experience.
FLORIDA KEYS CULTURE MAGAZINE
I was able to finance my SCUBA certification trip to Key Largo with this awarded grant from the Keys Culture Council and piggybacked onto the trip going into the lower keys to interview local artists. This project was an opportunity to combine humanities writing with nature writing.
SEA LION WOMAN: A SELKIE STORY FOR A NEW MILLENNIUM
I wrote this intricate piece on selkie folklore for the beautiful _Seven Miles of Steel Thistles_ blog. It contains meditations on cetacean captivity and also relational abuse.
I have been privileged to contribute ten feature articles so far for this extraordinary, lavish magazine, including a travelogue of my Yeats pilgrimage to Ireland (Winter 2015), a profile of the Estonian singer Kerli (Winter 2016), and a visit with writer Catherynne Valente on Peaks Island, Maine (Summer 2016). Faerie is a print publication yet you can acquire past issues through the link above.
A PRAYER FOR JAMES FOLEY: A FUNERAL MASS FOR A YOUNG AMERICAN,
One of two pieces I have written now for Parabola, and they are both only in print with back issues available for order. After I wrote the memorial for Mr Foley, a UMass alum, I had interviewed so many of his friends and professors that I attended his funeral for emotional closure.
The Carnival cycle in Luzern, a photoessay.
MY SLIGHTLY METAPHYSICAL TRAVEL TIPS,
A fun invitation piece with suggestions I still live by!
THE WHALE ROAD: MELVILLE'S MASSACHUSETTS BY LAND AND SEA, THE BOSTON GLOBE
My first travel article: a road-trip pilgrimage from Mt Greylock to Nantucket to Provincetown—
culminating with humpback whales!
The Vanderbilt View gave me my first opportunities as a features writer. This night in a sleep lab set the stage for future forays into gonzo journalism!
These pictorial pieces are featured on the homepage of UMass Magazine and I produce several of them a year. Here are some of my favorites:
Banding Day 2016 : banding the eyass!
Water, Desert, and Salt : salt flats of the Atacama Desert, Chile
Encyclopedia of Life Exploring the Natural History Collection
DIVING WITH DOLPHINS IN KONA, HAWAI'I
Published by Misadventures Magazine, a travel journal for women
AMERICAN WILD, PROFILE OF JEFF CORWIN, UMASS MAGAZINE
The gorgeous new web version of the magazine! This is an important conversation with a premier conservationist, about public lands, and rattlesnakes.
THE DOLPHINS OF ATLANTIS, _FAERIE MAGAZINE_
Faerie produced a rare online version of my feature about my expedition with the dolphins of Bimini, to preview their Summer mermaid issue!
MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS: THE TWA HOTEL
On my way to Egypt, I had a layover at JFK Airport—and made the best of it. For The Hedonist.
WE WANT QUANT
The Mary Quant exhibition at the V&A Museum highlights issues of feminism, money, and independence. For THE FALL magazine.
DUBLIN ESSAY, CUIK MAGAZINE
This is a great place to showcase a sample of your written work or write short description about your project. Did you collaborate on a print or multimedia project? If so, dazzle your visitors with images and video! Make sure to include a link to the full live project or document so readers can enjoy the entire piece.
