Cherubim I is the second order of Angels in my Angelic Orders series, yet he was the first one I made. He began as my experimenting with a portal painting technique, forming this great kite of cobalt blue. Then I began seeing eyes everywhere, bordering it. Cherubim are known for their eyes—so right away I knew a Cherubim was emerging, someone like Proginoskes from Madeleine L'Engle's A Wind in the Door. A singular Cherubim. However, unlike the way Progo is usually depicted, I did not want these to be vertebrate eyes, but 'primitive' eyes: eyespots and eyes like are on the end of eyestalks and the blue eyes scallops have.

The other angelic orders are represented by their different colors in the grid/rays/bands of light behind him. Through filaments and gold streamers, we are connected with the everything. You might imagine: I go through a lot of cerulean blue when I paint!

The series will be available for purchase as a unity, all nine paintings, in 2026, after an exhibition in which they are all shown together.
